Properties of Monosaccharides

Saccharides are better known as carbohydrates literally hydrates of carbon. Relatively complex carboyhydrates are known as polysaccharides. The simplest carbohydrates are monosaccharides, which are small straight-chain aldehydes and ketones with many hydroxyl groups added, usually one on each carbon except the functional group. Monosaccharides are the building blocks of disaccharides such as sucrose and lactose and polysaccharides such as cellulose and starch. A disaccharide is formed when two monosaccharides simple sugars undergo a condensation reaction which involves the elimination of a small molecule, such as water, from the functional groups only.

Monosaccharides such as glucose and fructose are crystalline solids at room temperature, but they are quite soluble in water, each molecule having several OH groups that readily engage in hydrogen bonding. The chemical behavior of these monosaccharides is likewise determined by their functional groups. An important reaction of monosaccharides is the oxidation of the aldehyde group, one of the most easily oxidized organic functional groups. These reactions have been used as simple and rapid diagnostic tests for the presence of glucose in blood or urine. Monosaccharides are crystalline solids at room temperature and quite soluble in water.

Monosaccharides from Greek monos : single, sacchar : sugar , also called simple sugars , are the simplest form of sugar and the most basic units monomers of carbohydrates. Contrary to their name sugars , only some monosaccharides have a sweet taste. Examples of monosaccharides include glucose dextrose , fructose levulose , and galactose. Monosaccharides are the building blocks of disaccharides such as sucrose and lactose and polysaccharides such as cellulose and starch. Each carbon atom that supports a hydroxyl group is chiral , except those at the end of the chain. This gives rise to a number of isomeric forms, all with the same chemical formula.

Properties of Monosaccharides

The edible and medicinal perennial herb dandelion is known to have antitumor, antioxidant, and anticomplement properties. However, the structural characterization and biological effects of its polysaccharides are not well understood. Here, we aimed to extract and investigate a novel polysaccharide from dandelion. A water-soluble polysaccharide, PD, was successfully obtained from dandelion through ultrasonic-assisted extraction and purification using diethylaminoethyl DEAE —Sepharose fast flow and Sephadex G columns. The results showed that PD is an inulin-type polysaccharide with a molecular weight of 2. A physicochemical analysis indicated that PD has a triple helix structure and exhibits important properties, including good swelling, water-holding, and oil-holding capacities.

Moreover, it was a contributing factor in over , deaths in which the cause was listed as something else, such as heart or kidney disease. People with diabetes are impaired in their ability to metabolize glucose, a sugar needed by the body for energy; as a result, excessive quantities of glucose accumulate in the blood and the urine. The characteristic symptoms of diabetes are weight loss, constant hunger, extreme thirst, and frequent urination the kidneys excrete large amounts of water in an attempt to remove the excess sugar from the blood.

The physical properties and many chemical properties of monosaccharides depend on the molecular shape. Equilibria of pyranoid compounds depend largely.
