A foreign direct investment FDI is an investment in the form of a controlling ownership in a business in one country by an entity based in another country. The origin of the investment does not impact the definition, as an FDI: the investment may be made either "inorganically" by buying a company in the target country or "organically" by expanding the operations of an existing business in that country. Broadly, foreign direct investment includes "mergers and acquisitions, building new facilities, reinvesting profits earned from overseas operations, and intra company loans".
However, it does allow influence over the company's management, operations, and policies. For this reason, governments track investments in their country's businesses. Their countries need private investment in infrastructure, energy, and water to increase jobs and wages. Four agencies keep track of FDI statistics. A foreign direct investment happens when a corporation or individual invests and owns at least ten percent of a foreign company.
Foreign direct investment FDI is where an individual or business from one nation, invests in another. This could be to start a new business or invest in an existing foreign owned business. He invests this, creating a new clothing manufacturing firm in the country. This would classify as a FDI. However, the definition is slightly different when it comes to investing in a foreign companies assets. According to the IMF , a foreign direct investment is where the investor purchases over a 10 percent stake in the company. For instance, this covers the small amount of stocks that the average citizen may have invested.
Hence one reason why the government feared the surge of the Foreign Direct Investments in India was the displacement of labour. Hence the issue of displacement of labour consequent to FDI is of primal importance. There are different viewpoints on the impact of FDI in the retail sector in India, According to one viewpoint, the US evidence is empirical proof to the fact that FDI in the retail sector does not lead to any collapse in the existing employment opportunities. There are divergent views as well. Introduction: One of the most striking developments in the last two decades has been in the FDI in the global economic landscape. FDI provides a win-win situation both to the host as well as home country. The rapid expansion in the FDI by multi-national enterprises since the mid-eighties may be attributed to significant changes in technologies, greater liberalization of trade and investment regime, deregulation and privatization of markets in many countries including developing countries like India.
India, being the country with the second most-population, has immense scope for retail expansion as along with time, urbanization and consumerism has also been increasing. Initially, India was conservative regarding FDI; it imposed restriction on foreign companies to limit their share in equity capital of their Indian subsidiaries but over the time Government of India gradually liberalized foreign investment in various sectors. In this paper, the author will analyze the impact of such decisions on the Retail sector in India with special emphasis on the activities of Wal-Mart in the retail sector. It is to be noted that foreign capital was already allowed in single-brand retailing and this was, therefore, an extension of that policy to multi-brand retailing. Notwithstanding the earlier forays of foreign retailers in the Indian markets, the debate over FDI in retailing has been going on for quite some time. The vociferous opposition to foreign capital in this sector was a major factor why the bill was delayed in the parliament.
Indian retail industry is one of the sunrise sectors with huge growth potential. However, in spite of the recent developments in retailing and its immense contribution to the economy, retailing continues to be the least evolved industries and the growth of organized retailing in India has been much slower as compared to rest of the world. Earlier, in December , Indian government removed the 51 percent cap on FDI into single-brand retail outlets in and opened the market fully to foreign investors by permitting percent foreign investment in this area. After much dilly dallying, India recently allowed the 51percent FDI in multiband retail. The decision was criticized in the political circles and appreciated in the economic circle. Prime Minister of India in his address to the nation called the decision as a need of the economy. AT Kearney a globally famous international management consultancy recognized India as the second most alluring and thriving retail destination of the world.
