The impact of land reform on the status of large carnivores in Zimbabwe

These are defined and identified when the project starts. A successful grant proposal is one that is carefully prepared, planned, and packaged. But the more you know, the better the proposal will look. A project proposal usually includes a detailed description of the activities involved within a prospective project, and is a formal way of proposing work before a project begins. The proposal format is based on the Planning for Life grant initiative, but can be adapted by project developers according to donor requirements. Project failure is inevitable. These schools are in a low-income community that consists of some 20, families.

Large carnivores are decreasing in number due to growing pressure from an expanding human population. It is increasingly recognised that state-protected conservation areas are unlikely to be sufficient to protect viable populations of large carnivores, and that private land will be central to conservation efforts. In , a fast-track land reform programme FTLRP was initiated in Zimbabwe, ostensibly to redress the racial imbalance in land ownership, but which also had the potential to break up large areas of carnivore habitat on private land. To date, research has focused on the impact of the FTLRP process on the different human communities, while impacts on wildlife have been overlooked. Here we provide the first systematic assessment of the impact of the FTLRP on the status of large carnivores. Spoor counts were conducted across private, resettled and communal land use types in order to estimate the abundance of large carnivores, and to determine how this had been affected by land reform. The density of carnivore spoor differed significantly between land use types, and was lower on resettlement land than on private land, suggesting that the resettlement process has resulted in a substantial decline in carnivore abundance.

In , Zimbabwe's white minority owned commercial farms covered nearly half the country's agricultural land. Yet today, the state of Zimbabwe, controlled by the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union—Patriotic Front party, holds titles to almost all formerly white. The removal of constitutional constraints, which accelerated after , was the crucial variable that enabled this transfer of ownership. By developing such a land regime, Zimbabwe has come to resemble most African states, which control rural land and can allocate and re-allocate it unimpeded by constitutional constraints. Today, significant private land ownership in Africa is confined to two former settler states, South Africa and Namibia.

A version of this article appears in Project Syndicate. The world economy is experiencing a tepid, uneven, and fragile recovery from the depths of the COVID recession. As the struggle to contain the virus continues, and with fears of a second wave mounting, the risks of substantial and long-lasting scarring effects on economies are rising. Private sector confidence has been battered, which does not bode well for business investment and employment creation. There are some positive omens. World merchandise trade has rebounded strongly, consistent with indications of a revival in household demand for goods in many economies even as the demand for services remains hobbled by restrictions and consumer concerns. Financial markets have held up surprisingly well, with stock markets in many countries recovering close to or even exceeding their pre-COVID levels.
