Summary of review 1. What we know : It is likely that nutrition deficiency during pregnancy and early childhood affects individual cognition, behaviour, long term productivity and also negatively impacts economic development. What this article adds : Severe acute malnutrition, chronic undernutrition intrauterine growth retardation and stunting , iron deficiency anaemia and iodine deficiency are key risk factors for poor motor, cognitive, and socio-emotional development and should be a global priority.

This includes factors such as the quantity, quality, timing and nutrient components of every meal. Physical maturation follows the same course for all children, although rates will differ between individuals. Post-natal growth spans three age periods: infancy , which is the first year of life; childhood , which extends from infancy to around 10 years of age; and adolescence , which is defined as between 10 and 18 years of age. Across all developmental stages, changes in body proportions and the mastering of fundamental motor skills are all part of biological maturation. These are also very sensitive to the nutritional status of the individual.

The impact of nutrition on brain development in preterm infants has been increasingly appreciated.

Nutrition and Early Brain Development

See our Coronavirus resources for early childhood professionals. Parenting Resource. Brain development is most sensitive to a baby's nutrition between mid-gestation and two years of age. Children who are malnourished—not just fussy eaters but truly deprived of adequate calories and protein in their diet—throughout this period do not adequately grow, either physically or mentally. Their brains are smaller than normal because of reduced dendritic growth, reduced myelination, and the production of fewer glia supporting cells in the brain which continue to form after birth and are responsible for producing myelin. Inadequate brain growth explains why children who were malnourished as fetuses and infants suffer often lasting behavioral and cognitive deficits, including slower language and fine motor development, lower IQ, and poorer school performance.

Nutrition and Brain Development

Nutrition has been called the single greatest environmental influence on babies in the womb and during infancy 1 , and it remains essential throughout the first years of life. A proper balance of nutrients in this formative period is critical for normal brain development. Similarly, there is growing evidence that DHA, an essential fatty acid, is a key component of the intensive production of synapses that makes the first years of life a critical period of learning and development. Many other nutrients—choline, folic acid, and zinc, to name just a few—have been linked specifically to early brain functioning.

Brain development in humans is remarkably resistant to permanent damage from protein-energy malnutrition. However, specific nutrients have crucial roles. Iodine deficiency is the most important and widespread nutrient deficiency; it causes endemic cretinism, associated with deaf-mutism and cerebral palsy. Iodine deficiency during pregnancy causes both maternal and fetal hypothyroxinemia, resulting in irreversible impairment of brain development at a critical stage.

Role of the Healthcare Professional
