Archaeology is often seen as a scientific discipline that explores the material of the past. Likewise, heritage is conventionally understood as material from the past to which people develop a sense of attachment and pride. Although heritage studies, as an academic endeavour, is relatively new compared with the science of archaeology, we argue that ancient cultures conserved material of the past because they considered it their heritage.

This chapter surveys Roman law as an important influence upon the development of law in the European legal tradition. Starting with the origins of the Roman state in the myth of Romulus and Remus, it provides an account of the main constitutional structures of the Roman state across time. These structures provide the backdrop for a larger discussion of the nature of Roman law, the sources of law, and the changes to the Roman legal order. Keywords: Roman law , ius commune , civil law , Roman jurisprudence , sources of law. If history is the study of change, and legal history is the study of legal change, then classical and post-classical Roman law, because of its significant impact on the entire narrative of European legal history, requires little justification as an area of focus in a volume of this kind. With that said, and given that the Roman Empire existed in some form or another for more than 1, years, restricting oneself to a snapshot of four and a half centuries even if those centuries have been judged to be seminal , necessarily involves choices concerning coverage and omissions which some might find upsetting.
