This review of the literature on attachment theory seeks to highlight important concepts relevant to teacher-child attachment. It includes a brief overview of attachment theory and adult conceptualisations of attachment, and then discusses more specifically teacher-child attachment. Much of the literature in early childhood focuses on child attachment to primary caregivers, which is highly relevant, but a greater understanding of adult attachment, and attachment to other caregivers, is also deemed pertinent. It is also noted that a greater understanding of adult attachment in the early childhood context is particularly relevant as New Zealand has an increasing uptake of early childhood education and care services, necessitating an understanding of attachment by all the caregivers involved. Over time attachment experiences of self in relation to others form the blueprint for the manner in which children and adults approach and negotiate relationships Treboux, Crowell, and Waters,

ATTACHMENT IN THE TEACHER-STUDENT DYAD AND GENDER ROLES

One hundred thirty-two secondary teachers participated in a quantitative study relying on self-report questionnaire data. Based on the model of teacher emotions by Frenzel , teachers rated their experienced joy, anger and anxiety during classroom instruction dependent variable. Although the topic is attracting increasing interest in educational research e. Schutz and Zembylas , the empirical evidence on teacher emotions is not extensive Frenzel The present study explores the antecedents of teacher emotions, focusing on student behaviour in the classroom and the interpersonal relationship that is formed between teachers and students.

This study was designed to explore whether children's representations of attachment contribute to the co-construction of positive teacher—child relationships. An assessment of verbal intelligence was included as a predictor on the assumption that teachers might perceive themselves as having better relationships with more verbally competent children. Participants were 52 children from two pre-schools, in the district of Lisbon. The PCV-P a scale developed in portuguese language was used to describe teacher—child relationships through teachers' ratings of child secure base behavior and emotion regulation and the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence WPPSI-R was used to access verbal skills. Bivariate correlations showed that the teachers' rating of child secure base behavior was significantly associated with both child attachment security and verbal IQ.

How teachers form and maintain classroom and staffroom relationships is crucial to the success of their work. A teacher who is able to accurately interpret the underlying relationship processes can learn to proactively, rather than reactively, influence the dynamics of any class. These are skills that can be taught. This invaluable text explains how adult attachment theory offers new ways to examine professional teaching relationships, classroom management and collegial harmony: equally important information for school leaders, teacher mentors and proteges. Attachment Theory and the Teacher-Student Relationship addresses three significant gaps in the current literature on classroom management: the effects of teachers' attachment style on the formation and maintenance of classroom and staffroom relationships the importance of attachment processes in scaffolding teachers' and students emotional responses to daily educational tasks the degree of influence these factors have on teachers' classroom behaviour, particularly management of student behaviour. Based on recent developments in adult attachment theory, this book highlights the key aspects of teacher-student relationships that teachers and teacher educators should know. As such, it will be of great interest to educational researchers, teacher educators, students and training teachers.

Attachment theory offers an exceptional insight into the individual's personality, since it can be used to explain his or her behaviour and cognitive patterns present in everyday interactions with people in domestic, educational or professional spheres.
