Wole Soyinka's Death and the King's Horseman has been widely acclaimed as a great example of African tragedy. It is, in fact, the dramatic aggregation of Soyinka's treatise in Myth, Literature and the African World. Hence, the play is most often 'read' in the lights of its 'difference' from western notions of the tragic, the place of ritual in African drama and the interface of myth and history in creating drama, among others. As a result of these, and influenced largely by the author's note on the play, Death and the King's Horseman is rarely considered as a play on the 'clash of cultures', which is usually viewed as a 'reductionist' orientation or reading.

A Study Guide for Wole Soyinka's "Death and the King's Horsemen"

Death and the King's Horseman is a play by Wole Soyinka based on a real incident that took place in Nigeria during the colonial era : the horseman of a Yoruba King was prevented from committing ritual suicide by the colonial authorities. Soyinka wrote the play in Cambridge , where he was a fellow at Churchill College during his political exile from Nigeria. In particular, he says that the play should not be considered as "clash of cultures. Death and the King's Horseman builds upon the true story on which Soyinka based the play, to focus on the character of Elesin, the King's Horseman of the title. According to Yoruba tradition, the death of the king must be followed by the ritual suicide of the king's horseman as well as the king's dog and horse, because the horseman's spirit is essential to helping the chief's spirit ascend to the afterlife.

Death, the end of life on the existential plane or of material being, has transfixed humans with its unblinking gaze from the origins of time, so much so that death has even been posited as the aim of life itself. Sacrifice is a central component of the ritual. Only through Elesin sacrificing himself can the ritual be completed. Of course, Elesin cannot complete this successfully, due to both external and internal circumstances. It is Olunde who makes the ultimate sacrifice by taking his own life so he can fulfill the Yoruba ritual. This foreshadowed in the conversation regarding self-sacrifice between Olunde and Jane, who have very different ideas about the nature of this act. Jane finds the captain's sacrifice distasteful, but Olunde views it as a life-affirming and heroic act.

It is based on a real-life incident that occurred in the s, at a time when Britain retained colonial control of the Yoruba cultural heartland that had become part of Nigeria in when the Northern and Southern Protectorates of the country were amalgamated. Indeed, most of the festivities do take place, but not the suicide that was to follow it. The term refers to what it means around the world when one is English-speaking in relation to other languages with which English mixes and collides to invent new and expanded communities of speakers of the language at home and abroad. And indeed, the play very quickly became a classic of Anglophone drama — a work written in English but emerging from a culture on which English was imposed, much as how great Irish writers have almost always written in the English language and not Gaelic.

Death and the King's Horseman tells the story of Elesin, chief of the King's stables, who lives a most privileged life amongst his. Yoruba tribe in return for his future.

Death and the King's Horseman Themes

In the introduction to the play, Soyinka says outright that it's inappropriate and reductive to consider Death and the King's Horseman only as a play about a "clash of cultures" and the role of colonialism in Nigeria. Instead, he encourages readers and prospective directors to focus on the conflict that Elesin experiences as he fails to follow through with his suicide for a host of other reasons not related to Pilkings 's attempts to stop him. Despite this warning, the fact remains that colonialism, racism, and prejudice loom large over the story, if only because it takes place in colonial Nigeria during World War Two. When considered in terms of colonialism, the action of Death and the King's Horseman becomes less about one man's failure to uphold his society's traditions and maintain cosmic order—instead, Elesin and Olunde 's deaths come to symbolize the death of the Yoruba society as a whole under colonial rule. It becomes clear in the side comments and observations of all characters, Yoruba and English alike, that the city of Oyo has a long and tragic history of European occupation that, even in the play's present, influences all the characters.

Eurocentrism has made Europeans have the strong desire to impose western culture on Africans. However, culture is fundamental for the survival and development of any nation, for it is this culture which determines the values and customs of any people through their beliefs and behaviours, art and philosophy that may be proper to them. Culture may vary from one people to another. Therefore can culture be made universal? Can a people impose its culture on another?
