Deconstruction and Philosophy

Trace French : trace is one of the most important concepts in Derridian deconstruction. In the s, Jacques Derrida used this concept in two of his early books, namely Writing and Difference and Of Grammatology. In French, the word trace has a range of meanings similar to those of its English equivalent, but also suggests meanings related to the English words "track", "path", or "mark". In the preface to her translation of Of Grammatology , Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak wrote "I stick to 'trace' in my translation, because it 'looks the same' as Derrida's word; the reader must remind himself of at least the track, even the spoor , contained within the French word". Derrida does not positively or strictly define trace, and denies the possibility of such a project. His refusal to apply only one name to his concepts is a deliberate strategy to avoid a set of metaphysical assumptions that, he argues, have been central to the history of European thought.

This volume, consisting of a conversation with Derrida that is further elaborated by one of his leading interpreters, represents one of the most lucid, compact and reliable introductions to Derrida and deconstruction available in any language. Responding to questions put to him at a roundtable held at Villanova University in , Jacques Derrida leads the reader through an illuminating discussion of the central themes of deconstruction. Speaking in English and extemporaneously, Derrida takes up with unusual clarity and great eloquence such topics as the task of philosophy, the Greeks, justice, responsibility, the gift, community, and the messianic. Derrida refutes the charges of relativism that are often leveled at deconstruction by its critics and sets forth the profoundly affirmative and ethico-political thrust of his work. Jacques Derrida was the single most influential voice in European philosophy for the last third of the twentieth century.

During his career Derrida published more than 40 books, together with hundreds of essays and public presentations. He had a significant influence on the humanities and social sciences , including philosophy, literature , law , [9] [10] [11] anthropology , [12] historiography , [13] applied linguistics , [14] sociolinguistics , [15] psychoanalysis and political theory. His work retains major academic influence throughout the US [16] continental Europe , South America and all other countries where continental philosophy has been predominant, particularly in debates around ontology , epistemology especially concerning social sciences , ethics , aesthetics , hermeneutics , and the philosophy of language. In most of the Anglosphere , where analytic philosophy is dominant, Derrida's influence is most presently felt in literary studies due to his longstanding interest in language and his association with prominent literary critics from his time at Yale. He also influenced architecture in the form of deconstructivism , music , [17] art , [18] and art criticism. Particularly in his later writings, Derrida addressed ethical and political themes in his work.

Deconstructions

Closure versus subversion, product versus practice, meaning-containing object versus significance-scattering process: Barthes' theory of writing owes a great deal, as we shall see, both to Marxism and to psychoanalysis. Deconstructionist design wasn't well received by modernism, an advocate of practicality and effectiveness; however, as the beginning of subsequent postmodernism, it started to earn a warm welcome from a number of designers. There has been incessant critical contradiction in terms of the heritage of deconstruction. Then there is a section on the contemporary deconstructionist approach of Jacques Derrida and Paul de Man who expose tropic activity within philosophical discourse itself. Abdul Hakim, KH. Deconstruction is an approach to understanding the relationship between text and meaning. It was originated by the philosopher Jacques Derrida — , who defined the term variously throughout his career. In its simplest form it can be regarded as a criticism of Platonism and the idea of true forms, or essences, which take precedence over appearances. Derrida would say that the difference is "undecidable", in that it cannot be discerned in everyday experiences. Deconstruction argues that language, especially ideal concepts such as truth and justice, is irreducibly complex, unstable, or impossible to determine. Many debates in continental philosophy surrounding ontology , epistemology , ethics , aesthetics , hermeneutics , and philosophy of language refer to Derrida's beliefs. Since the s, these beliefs have inspired a range of theoretical enterprises in the humanities , [2] including the disciplines of law , [3] : 3—76 [4] [5] anthropology , [6] historiography , [7] linguistics , [8] sociolinguistics , [9] psychoanalysis , LGBT studies , and feminism.
