This chapter discusses different types of intertextual and intergeneric connections between Greek-style comedy and serious dramatic genres, particularly Greek-style tragedy, in republican Rome. In Roman comedy, instances of tragicomedy, paratragedy, and a variety of other, more or less clearly marked references to serious drama can be discerned. This is shown by an analysis of a number of significant examples, many of which are taken from the works of the comic playwright Plautus. The evidence demonstrates that there was productive and creative engagement among the different dramatic genres in Rome throughout the republican period, as the full range of dramatic forms evolved, and that from a relatively early stage onwards poets and audiences were aware of generic characteristics.
