It is a concise review of key physiologic principles and is intended to help the student recall material taught during the first and second years of medical school. It is not intended to substitute for comprehensive textbooks or for course syllabi, although the student may find it a useful adjunct to physiology and pathophysiology courses. The material is organized by organ system into seven chapters. The first chapter reviews general principles of cellular physiology.
The remaining six chapters review the major organ systems—neurophysiology, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, acid—base, gastrointestinal, and endocrine physiology. Difficult concepts are explained stepwise, concisely, and clearly, with appropriate illustrative examples and sample problems. Numerous clinical correlations are included so that the student can understand physiology in relation to medicine. An integrative approach is used, when possible, to demonstrate how the organ systems work together to maintain homeostasis.
More than full-color illustrations and flow diagrams and more than 50 tables help the student visualize the material quickly and aid in long-term retention. These questions, many with clinical relevance, require problem-solving skills rather than straight recall. Clear, concise explanations accompany the questions and guide the student through the correct steps of reasoning. The questions can be used as a pretest to identify areas of weakness or as a posttest to determine mastery. Special attention should be given to the Comprehensive Examination, because its questions integrate several areas of physiology and related concepts of pathophysiology and pharmacology.
As in prior editions, we have updated the format and, we hope, the utility of this work by substituting and adding even more color illustrations. While attempting to keep this fifth edition as short as possible, we have added what we consider to be significant material needed for updating. As before, the end-of-chapter study questions and the comprehensive examination at the end of the book are entirely cast in vignette format.
This should be helpful for students preparing for similar examinations administered by national accrediting groups. We recommend that this book not be used as a primary text, but rather, as the series title suggests, as a supplement for study and for review.
Following the initial study of a unit in a pathology course, many students will find that review of the corresponding material in this book will aid in the identification of major concepts that deserve special emphasis. Also, this book can serve as a source for end-of-year review and for review for national examinations. Special attention is again directed to the Answers and Explanations that follow the end-of-chapter Review Test questions and the Comprehensive Examination questions at the end of the text.
Much of the teaching material is emphasized in these discussions, and it is recommended that these sections be reviewed carefully as part of examination preparation. Writing a new edition of a book always provides an opportunity to improve upon previous editions. This fourth edition of Rapid Review Pathology reflects these improvements thanks to many discussions I have had over the past 4 years with my colleagues in the basic sciences and my students, and comments from students in other medical schools.
The project began with a simple idea: to create a concise yet comprehensive microbiology review tool. After years of work, what has emerged is a deck of cards that we believe will help medical students learn this material and sail through USMLE Part 1 examinations, will offer physicians a handy reference, and will inspire enthusiasm and interest in microbiology at all levels of the health care profession.
Another set of flashcards that you can use on the go. Like MicroCards, these cards have a ton of information. However, you will be asked some very specific questions. One example is mechanism of action of ethosuximide.
This book aims to fill the need for a short, down-to-earth, high-yield survey of biostatistics, and judging by the demand for a fourth edition, it seems to have succeeded so far. One big change in this edition: in anticipation of an expected major expansion of the material to be included in the USMLE Content Outline, with the inclusion of Epidemiology and Population Health, this book covers much more material.
The USMLE US Medlcal Licensing Examination is also focusing more and more on material that will be relevant to the practicing physician, who needs to be an intelligent and critical reader of the vast amount of medical information that appears daily, not only in the professional literature but also in pharmaceutical advertising, news media, and websites, and are often brought in by patients bearing printouts and reports of TV programs they have seen.
USMLE is taking heed of these changes, which can only be for the better. This book aims to cover the complete range of biostatistics, epidemiology, and population health material that can be expected to appear in USMLE Step 1, without going beyond that range.
For a student who is just reviewing the subject, the mnemonics, the items marked as high-yield, and the ultra-high-yield review will allow valuable points to be picked up in an area of USMLE that is often neglected. But this book is not just a set of notes to be memorized for an exam. It also provides explanations and I hope memorable examples so that the many medical students who are confused or turned off by the excessive detail and mathematics of many statistics courses and textbooks can get a good understanding of a subject that is essential to the effective practice of medicine.
The behavioral sciences will also take up at least of your Step 1 questions. This subject is hard to study but you must find a way to do it. There are a few books options in this category, the great asset of the BRS book are about questions at the end of each chapter. Previous editions of this volume have been quite popular with medical students.
To this end, the book contains over such questions with accompanying annotated answers. An exam follows each chapter and a Comprehensive Exam is included at the end of the book.
This edition represents an outstanding effort by a talented group of authors and includes the following:. For one thing, this score actually counts! Although for many of you the most important goal in taking Step 1 is passing this exam, we know that is not enough. Earning a spot in a competitive field or residency program requires you to do more than just pass in order to compete with other high-caliber students.
