The church calendar set the pace and rhythm of daily life according to fiesta and liturgical seasons. Market places and cockfight pits sprang up near church walls. Most of those who follow these cults are the poor, dispossessed, and dislocated and feel alienated from the Catholic church. A new Filipino translation of the Bible's New Testament aims to attract young readers by using what its publishers described as "heterogenous language," which is characterized by a mix of Filipino and English.
