The catacombs are the underground cemetery complexes used by ancient Romans from the 1st to the 7th centuries. The majority, but not all, are Christian. Rome first developed as a city under the suzerainty of the Etruscan civilisation , which practiced inhumation of its dead.

A martyr refers to a person who, according to biblical stories, was killed because of their testimony of Jesus and God. At first, the term applied to Apostles. Once Christians started to undergo persecution , the term came to be applied to those who suffered hardships for their faith. Finally, it was restricted to those who had been killed for their faith. The early Christian period before Constantine I was the "Age of martyrs". In western Christian art , martyrs are often shown holding a palm frond as an attribute , representing the victory of spirit over flesh, and it was widely believed that a picture of a palm on a tomb meant that a martyr was buried there. It was used for a person who speaks from personal observation.

From all quarters vast numbers of people came pouring forth to one common destination. Over the Capitoline Hill, through the Forum, past the Temple of Peace and the Arch of Titus and the imperial palace; on they went till they reached the Coliseum, where they entered its hundred doors and disappeared within. There a wonderful scene presented itself. Below, the vast arena spread out, surrounded by the countless rows of seats which rose to the top of the outer wall, over a hundred feet.
