A study by Kramar examined a new approach to human resource management HRM that has a title of sustainable human resource management or sustainable HRM in its short form. The objective of the article is to demonstrate an attempt to link two notions such as HRM and sustainability, as well as to allow readers to understand the essence of the new approach as well as to see its future perspectives. It was hypothesized that sustainable HRM is different from classical strategic HRM and is not aimed only at measuring financial outcomes because human and social, as well as environmental and ecological outcomes are also of a great importance. Thus, a new approach is a possibility to improve management practice. Moreover, the article brightly describes the main characteristics of sustainable HRM, and proved that this approach has a big future.

This chapter addresses this oversight, three problems are identified in current SustHRM theorization and prospects for theory development are proffered in the context of sustainable tourism and development in Africa. First, at the organizational level, current SustHRM theorization needs to move beyond outcomes focused on superficial and moderate organizational change to include scope for more radical change to organizational strategies, structures, business models and paradigms. Second, at the level of interfirm collaboration, current SustHRM theorization needs to address sustainability within supply chains and global value chains while paying attention to power relations and inequalities between developing and developed nations. Third, current SustHRM theorization needs to move beyond an instrumental, Western-centric and narrow approach to incorporate a more assertive, ethically grounded and broader role in promoting sustainability within the wider society.

This cross-sectional study shall empirically test the hypothesis based on research questions about primary data, collected from employees of public sector organizations. Based on positive epistemology in this deductive research, a hypothesis is designed, and data collected, through closed-ended survey questions using a convenience sampling technique. The present research finds that the government vision and policies about green human resource management practices were not fully explained to employees working in the public sector, hindering the attainment of organizational environmental goals, and hence national sustainability efforts. Green human resource management practices significantly contribute to organizational sustainability. To maintain sustainable growth and performance, organizations shall implement green concepts across organizations, including Human Resource Management departments.
