Managing multiple projects and deadlines has become the new norm for project managers in the workplace, partly because of corporate resource limitations and partly because of corporate efforts to increase efficiency. Often, such efforts can lead to project managers drowning in paperwork, sapping their crucial time and energy. What's the first thing you're supposed to do when faced with a stressful situation, such as a fire within your building? Stay calm. When you're in a heightened state of anxiety and stress, staying calm and composed helps you think clearly and remain cool.
As projects have become more and more complex, there has been an increasing concern about the concept of project complexity. An understanding of project complexity and how it might be managed is of significant importance for project managers because of the differences associated with decision-making and goal attainment that are related to complexity. Complexity influences project planning and control; it can hinder the clear identification of goals and objectives, it can affect the selection of an appropriate project organization form, or it can even affect project outcomes. Identifying the different concepts associated to project complexity, its main factors and characteristics, the different types of project complexity, and the main project complexity models, can be of great support in assisting the global project management community. In this paper, we give a general overview of how complexity has been investigated by the project management community and propose several ideas to address this topic in the future. The origins of complexity theory applied to project management can be traced back to the works by Morris [ 1 , 2 ], Bennet and Fine [ 3 ], Bubshait and Selen [ 4 ], Bennet and Cropper [ 5 ], Gidado [ 6 ], Wozniak [ 7 ], and Baccarini [ 8 ]. All these works highlight the importance of complexity in project contexts in general and in particular its effects on project goals and objectives, project organization form and arrangement, and in the experience requirements for the management personnel.
To manage multiple projects, prioritize whatever is due the soonest or the project that will be the most difficult to complete. These companies want to hire someone that they believe can handle the pressure of multiple projects. Hands up if you manage multiple projects? Though the answer above may not be how you prioritize under the pressure of actual assignments, it does do a good job showing that you come at these problems with a plan.
Project management is the process of leading the work of a team to achieve goals and meet success criteria at a specified time. The primary challenge of project management is to achieve all of the project goals within the given constraints. The primary constraints are scope , time, budget. The objective of project management is to produce a complete project which complies with the client's objectives.
Executives can do the job more effectively with a new system of color-coded and easy-to-read progress charts. The system is relatively uncomplicated; yet it has helped top executives in both of these divisions to manage effectively the performance of about different projects. In the division which first began using the system, the number of projects in serious trouble dropped from one in three to zero in a little over two years; in the second division, projects in trouble dropped from one in three to one in twenty in a two-year period—and continued improvement is anticipated. The approach described utilizes a very simple visual reporting technique. At the same time, it combines some well-recognized principles of managerial psychology with some newer principles of planning and control.
